The Things William Learned in California

Will learned a lot of new things during our few weeks in California. It is amazing to me that babies learn so quickly!

A quick list:
-He learned to clap (okay, this was technically in the 3 days before we left, but he did lots of practicing in CA).
-He learned to wave.
-He learned to sign "Milk" (the first sign that he does on his own!).
-He learned to cuddle. He is a very un-cuddly baby, but he will now put his head on your shoulder and smile. I'll take it!!!

And the cutest one of all (and the one with the BEST pictures)...

-He learned to do a "cheeser" smile.

We always make exaggerated smiling faces at him when we want him to smile for the camera. Now, he makes a variety of crazy, cheesy smiles. We get these smiles when we say "cheese!", or whenever he sees the camera or even just a bright light.

One night we were driving in the car. I noticed that every time we passed under a streetlight, he would do a cheesy smile toward the back window. He must have thought it was the flash from a camera. He is hilarious!!

Two Birthdays

Birthday #1: My Birthday

I loved my first birthday as a mom! It was so fun to celebrate with Daniel AND Will. Last year, I had a broken foot and a sinus infection on my birthday, so this year was definitely an improvement!

We celebrated all week long. Daniel took care of Will so that I could read a book and take a bubble bath most days. I loved it. Although we have been eating much healthier these days, we bought an extraordinary amount of treats that week. We always justified it with: "It's birthday week!"

One of the highlights of all of the birthday celebrations was going on a food tour. I first went on a food tour with my grandma when we were in New York City. It was the best part of the whole trip! The week of my birthday, I found a Groupon for a food tour in Seattle. Of course, I bought tickets immediately. Actually, I did text Daniel to see if that was okay with him, but I only waited about 15 seconds before I purchased us two tickets. No response needed.

(It was a sunny day.)

It was great. This tour was of Pike Place Market, which was so much bigger than I had realized. We ate many delicious things. Some of my favorites were the mini donuts, Holiday grapes, clam chowder, and crab cakes. Mmmm! Now, I will know where to take people when they come visit (which you all should do!!).

We tried to get me a birthday cake. Unfortunately, it didn't go so well.

(This was attempt #2)

First, I got a Tres Leches cake (which I have had several times). Normally, it is a moist, sweet cake with strawberries. This cake was missing the strawberries and tasted like soggy regular cake. We ate a few bites and threw the entire thing away.

Next, I got a chocolate cake with a chocolate glaze. It was dry. We even ate it with ice cream, but I really hate dry cake, so that one was thrown away too.

Last, I made some brownies from a box. They were actually very tasty. Lesson learned: I should just make my own birthday cake next year (or brownies from a box mix).

Although the cake was a bit of a setback, the rest of my birthday was wonderful. I received many wonderful presents, cards, and calls from lots of family and friends.

Birthday #2: Daniel's Birthday

A few weeks after my birthday was Daniel's birthday.

The most exciting part of his birthday was a surprise visitor - Trevin!

(Notice the balloons that we attached to the ceiling.)

Yay! Trevin came from Utah to visit us. He arrived the night before Daniel's birthday. Daniel had to go to Scouts that night, so Will and I went to the airport. We picked him up and had him sitting in our apartment when Daniel got home. He was so surprised!! We had been planning it for several weeks and I was so glad Daniel didn't find out. It took several lies and lots of sneaky behavior.

Will warmed up to him right away.

We spent the rest of the week playing around, visiting Seattle, and doing some general catching up. Will decided that he hated the car that week, and we heard a lot of screaming from him. We will see if Trevin ever wants to have children after that experience!

The only day that we took pictures was the day we went to Seattle.

(The Space Needle, of course.)

(It was raining - surprise, surprise.)

(We looked at a huge train and village.)

(The monorail was fun.)

(Will especially loved it.)

(We saw some gigantic gingerbread castles. Although not pictured, Will loved his first taste of a candy cane here.)

(These gingerbread houses were awesome!)

We had better luck with Daniel's cake. You can't go wrong with Coldstone.
